Customizable Auditory Displays

چکیده
High-quality virtual audio scene rendering is a must for emerging virtual and augmented reality applications, for perceptual user interfaces, and sonification of data. Personalization of HRTF is necessary in applications where perceptual realism and correct elevation perception is critical. We describe algorithms for creation of virtual auditory spaces by rendering cues that arise from anatomical scattering, environmental scattering, and dynamical effects. We use a novel way of personalizing the head related transfer functions (HRTFs) from a database, based on anatomical measurements. Details of algorithms for HRTF interpolation, room impulse response creation, HRTF selection from a database, and audio scene presentation are presented. Our system runs in real time on an office PC without specialized DSP hardware.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW We outline and discuss recent work on auditory displays, covering both auditory alarms that indicate technical or physiological threshold levels and informative auditory displays that provide a continuous awareness of a patient's well being. RECENT FINDINGS The struggle to make auditory alarms informative proceeds with work on two fronts. In one approach, researchers are dev...
متن کاملSonification and Auditory Displays in Electronic Devices
Sonification is the intentional use of sound to represent data. As visual displays both shrink and grow, as datasets grow in size and complexity, and as mobile data access increases, sophisticated auditory displays become crucial. Computers and devices that support audio are widespread, but there remains relatively little knowledge and experience among user interface designers in how to use aud...
متن کاملInteractions in Perceived Quality of Auditory-Visual Displays
The quality of realism in virtual environments (VEs) is typically considered to be a function of visual and audio fidelity mutually exclusive of each other. However, the VE participant, being human, is multimodal by nature. Therefore, in order to validate more accurately the levels of auditory and visual fidelity that are required in a virtual environment, a better understanding is needed of th...
متن کاملApplications of Virtual Auditory Displays
Current technology makes it possible to simulate naturally-occurring spatial auditory cues quite accurately. However, the cost of such a system is not justifiable, or even desirable, for all applications. This paper surveys some of the applications currently using virtual auditory displays and some of the issues important in the design of virtual auditory displays. Keywords—virtual environments...
متن کاملPerceptual Consenqueces of including Reverberation in Spatial Auditory Displays
This paper evaluates the perceptual consequences of including reverberation in spatial auditory displays for rapidly-varying signals (obstruent consonants). Preliminary results suggest that the effect of reverberation depends on both syllable position and reverberation characteristics. As many of the non-speech sounds in an auditory display share acoustic features with obstruent consonants, the...
